Air Suspension Kits 101

Some things to know about air suspension kits

Definition

Air suspension is a setup for suspensions that use compress air instead of shock absorbers and springs. The setup is made of four dampers full of air in compressed bags and a compressor for air decompression and compression. They are now used on the modified car scene and commonly for buses and heavy load vehicles. This type of air suspension is also known as Pneumatic Suspension or Airbags. Due to its popularity, air suspension kits are now manufactured instead of individually buying the needed parts.

Mechanism

The compressed air bags are stored in each wheel arch by a custom made damper to position them. The air bags are compressed or decompressed by the compressor placed inside the vehicle. It is liken to a hydraulic suspension that can be adjusted higher or lower by a switch.

Air suspension kits available for modified cars allow up to a four inch drop at the push of a button. Older or cheap types need a couple of seconds to compress or decompress but latest products allow fast air movement but maybe more expensive.

Availability

There are air suspension kits that are universal and required custom fitting for the vehicle. However, there are now plug & play suspension kits that are specific to car year, brand and model.

Advantages

It all boils down to style. Airbags are alternatives to those who want maximum drop-downs while parked and still enjoy the drive. As mentioned earlier, there are air suspension kits that can let the card drop up to four inches.

The fittings do have to be proper for the airbags to work well. Be sure that the air suspension kit chosen is suitable for the car and installed by professionals.
